Chase’s index: all the names in Chartism: A New History, by Malcolm Chase

When the historian Malcolm Chase completed his much-admired Chartism: A New History and submitted it to Manchester University Press for publication, he was told that the index was too long to be included.

A shorter version duly appears in the print edition, which was first published in 2007 and is still the single most important starting point for anyone seriously interested in Chartism. However, Professor Chase offered the full names index to Chartist Ancestors, believing rightly that it would provide a valuable additional resource. That index of names appears below, along with page references for the 2007 edition.

Malcolm Chase died in 2020 at the age of just 63, and is greatly missed by all who knew him. Read an obituary on the website of the Society for the Study of Labour History, or a more personal account of his life by his widow, Shirley Chase, on the website of the Brain Tumour Research charity.
